A Higher Standard
Insulation standards for new homes are higher today than ever before. New homeowners can see the results every month in lower heating and cooling bills, but even some homes insulated to today’s standards can waste a lot of energy. The reason? They leak air. When a home leaks air the homeowner can lose money and possibly a whole lot more.
Introducing EcoSeal
SBI is now using the EcoSeal air sealant technology by Knauf Insulation, providing a safe and affordable option for Seattle homeowners. The way it works is simple. When a home leaks air, it loses energy, feels less comfortable, costs more to heat and cool — and could have moisture and mold problems down the road. Leaks can be just about anywhere: the attic, outside walls, the basement or crawlspace, and door or window frames. In the past, SBI has tried to seal gaps with caulk or foam, but EcoSeal sealant offers a better solution. It’s a water-based elastomeric spray that is applied to the joints and seams of building materials before insulation is installed. EcoSeal sealant blocks and seals the air pathways and quickly dries to a tough flexible film. It gives you exceptional air sealing performance without the high cost and limitations of other insulation.
By combining EcoSeal with Knauf Insulation’s EcoBatt insulation or our premium blown-in insulation, you can create an insulation and sealing system that delivers protection against air infiltration and gives you exceptional thermal performance — all with an unbeatable combination of sustainability and simplicity at a fraction of the cost of traditional foamed-in-place products.
Retrofitting
SBI offers several air sealing solutions for your existing home. We can do complete air seal packages for your crawlspace and attic. Quite often the insulation in most existing homes is damaged by either rodents, water, mold or debris. We are able to safely and cleanly remove and dispose of all existing insulation. By removing the insulation it allows us to apply EcoSeal to your entire crawlspace or attic. Just by air-sealing these areas, you can see up to a 20 percent reduction in your energy bill.
Sustainability
EcoSeal is made of materials that are environmentally friendly and safe for your family:
- • Water-based; contains no solvents
- • No hazardous materials
- • Virtually no volatile organic compounds (less than 0.3 percent)
- • No CFCs or HCFCs used in manufacturing or installation
- • Meets or exceeds all state and federal requirements for VOCs for architectural sealants
- • Wide range of application temperatures, from 20 to 115 degrees Farenheit
- • Air leakage resistance exceeds EPA Energy Star requirements
